This week, as we spend time with family and friends, I have been thinking about the way families interact. Communication is sometimes strained, sometimes positive. It fluctuates between extremes, and can make us feel inadequate. With this, I think about the psychological aspect of familial interactions. We may be simultaneously aware of both how much we love our family, but we may also consider the way we get stressed about being with them.
Amid these interactions, I have also been considering the concept of defensive communication. We talk about this during the basic communication course, naturally, but during family interactions, we can really see it play out. Sarcasm, psychological withdrawal, avoidance, distancing, overly critical communication, outdoing others, etc., all of these play a part of these interactions.
What do you think? Communication among family members during the holidays: mostly good, or mostly challenging? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments!
