When composing your specific purpose for this course, you have to remember a few key details… I know that students tend to struggle with the concept at times, so I work pretty hard to make sure you have PLENTY of resources on composing one that is effective and appropriate. Here are the required components:
- Identify your speech’s general purpose (you can use one of the alternate verbs described in the ‘essentials’ handout on eLearning)
- Identify your audience (be as specific as possible; for example, my Introduction to Oral Communication classmates and instructor)
- Identify your specific component of the topic you plan to cover (a.k.a., your actual goal and focus; for example, three ways to lace and tie shoes)
So if we were to put this together, your Specific Purpose would read:
To inform my Introduction to Oral Communication classmates and instructor of three ways to effectively lace and tie shoes
