Specific Purpose: REMINDER

When composing your specific purpose for this course, you have to remember a few key details… I know that students tend to struggle with the concept at times, so I work pretty hard to make sure you have PLENTY of resources on composing one that is effective and appropriate. Here are the required components:

  1. Identify your speech’s general purpose (you can use one of the alternate verbs described in the ‘essentials’ handout on eLearning)
  2. Identify your audienceĀ (be as specific as possible; for example, my Introduction to Oral Communication classmates and instructor)
  3. Identify your specific component of the topic you plan to coverĀ (a.k.a., your actual goal and focus; for example, three ways to lace and tie shoes)

So if we were to put this together, your Specific Purpose would read:

To inform my Introduction to Oral Communication classmates and instructor of three ways to effectively lace and tie shoes

See? Easy peasy! Go back trough the textbook and the handouts on eLearning to make this easier for yourself. I give you examples of good and bad options in one handout! You CAN do this!
